The Valley of the Kings, located on the west bank of the Nile River near Luxor, Egypt, is one of the most famous and historically significant archaeological sites in the world. It served as the royal burial ground for the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (c. 1539–1075 BC), as well as some of their close family members and nobles. The valley contains more than 60 tombs, including those of legendary rulers like Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Seti I, and Thutmose III.

Unlike the massive pyramids of earlier periods, the tombs in the Valley of the Kings are carved deep into the limestone cliffs and hidden to protect them from grave robbers. While most of the tombs had been plundered in antiquity, Tutankhamun’s tomb provided invaluable insight into ancient Egyptian burial practices and the wealth of the pharaohs.

The Valley of the Kings is divided into two main areas: the East Valley, which houses the majority of the royal tombs, and the less-explored West Valley, which contains a few royal and noble tombs. Many of the tombs in the valley are open to visitors, allowing them to witness the incredible craftsmanship and artistry that went into these sacred burial sites.
