Tour Description

The Alexandria Library, also known as the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, is a modern revival of the ancient Library of Alexandria, one of the most renowned centers of knowledge and learning in the ancient world. Opened in 2002, the new library is located on the Mediterranean coast in Alexandria, Egypt, near the site of the original library, which was founded in the 3rd century BC during the reign of Ptolemy I. The ancient library, famous for its vast collection of manuscripts and texts, was tragically destroyed in antiquity, and the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina stands as a symbol of the continuation of that intellectual legacy.

The library is an architectural marvel, featuring a striking design by Norwegian architect Snøhetta. Its iconic structure resembles a massive tilted disc, symbolizing a rising sun, with an outer wall covered in inscriptions and characters from over 120 different scripts. The building houses a main reading room, which spans over 70,000 square meters, making it one of the largest in the world. It is designed to hold millions of books, with collections that encompass a wide range of subjects, including science, art, literature, and history.

In addition to its extensive book collection, the Alexandria Library is a vibrant cultural hub, hosting museums, galleries, a planetarium, a conference center, and research institutes. It also offers digital archives, rare manuscripts, and interactive exhibitions. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is not just a repository of knowledge but a place for intellectual exchange, continuing the ancient tradition of Alexandria as a center of learning and scholarship in the Mediterranean region.

This modern library is a testament to Egypt’s historical significance and its commitment to education and culture, attracting scholars, researchers, and tourists from around the world.
