Tour Description
Pompeii’s Pillar, also known as Pompey’s Pillar, is an ancient Roman triumphal column located in Alexandria, Egypt. Standing approximately 27 meters (88 feet) high, this massive granite column is one of the tallest surviving ancient monuments in the world. Despite its name, the pillar is not directly related to Pompey, the Roman general. Instead, it was erected in honor of the Roman Emperor Diocletian around 298 AD, to commemorate his victory over a local revolt and his relief of a famine in the city.
The column is made from a single piece of red Aswan granite and sits on a high pedestal. Its grand scale and impressive craftsmanship have made it a striking symbol of Roman influence in Alexandria. Pompeii’s Pillar was once part of a larger complex, the Serapeum, a grand temple dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian god Serapis.
Today, Pompeii’s Pillar remains a dominant feature of Alexandria’s skyline and a testament to the city’s historical significance as a hub of ancient culture, blending Egyptian, Greek, and Roman traditions.
